Patalab Architects and Loader Monteith appointed to deliver overhaul of German Consulate in Edinburgh
We are delighted to announce our appointment to deliver the restoration and refurbishment of the German Consulate General in Edinburgh, following a competitive two-stage UK- and EU-wide procurement process.
The successful design team brings together Patalab Architects, Loader Monteith and Hawthorne Boyle, with Patalab Architects leading the project as Design Architect and Project Manager.
Glasgow-based Loader Monteith will act as Executive and Conservation Architect, while engineering firm Hawthorne Boyle will lead the design and upgrade of the building services. The wider project team includes Armour Construction Consultants as Quantity Surveyor and Cost Consultant, and MHA as Structural Engineer.
Conservation, Accessibility and Sustainability
The German Consulate General is located within Edinburgh’s New Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, occupying a Category B-listed townhouse dating from 1880. Originally constructed as part of a crescent of terraced houses, the building forms part of the distinctive historic character of Edinburgh’s New Town.
The project will sensitively restore and adapt the property to support the operational requirements of a contemporary diplomatic mission, while protecting and enhancing its architectural and historic significance.
The comprehensive programme of work includes the conservation of the historic facade, remodelling of the lower ground floor to create a new visa office and the refurbishment of ancillary accommodation. Overall sustainability targets include to increase accessibility for all and provide barrier free access to ground and lower ground floors, address fire safety matters, upgrade buildings services throughout and improve energy efficiency of the building.
The appointment commenced in June 2026, with the project scheduled for completion in December 2028.
The German Consulate will be refurbished inside and out, creating a new visa section and upgrading services.
