Old Street Rooftop Extension wins Planning Approval
Planning Secured in Conservation Area
Islington Council has granted planning permission for our Old Street rooftop extension on a converted warehouse in Mallow Street. The project sits within the Bunhill Fields and Finsbury Square conservation area and follows a sustained period of collaboration with the planning team.
Our design enlarges the existing top floor apartment and adds a contemporary single storey structure that provides generous internal space and new private outdoor areas. The late Victorian warehouse has a strong vertical rhythm and a defined parapet, allowing the new volume to remain discreet above the surrounding streets.

Light Filled Living Spaces
The 110 square metre extension almost doubles the size of the home. A sculptural staircase forms the centre of the plan, creating an open sequence of living and dining areas with dual aspect views. Internally, pale finishes and a continuous herringbone timber floor give the home a calm and unified character, while the white painted metal stair appears to rise lightly between levels.
The new rooftop structure spans the full width of the building and is expressed as a dark metal volume that responds to the warehouse character while offering a contemporary identity. Setbacks create two terraces on the main living floor. A generous front terrace opens from the living space through Crittall style doors, while a smaller terrace supports the kitchen and study.
Urban Rooftop Retreat
Expanding Historic Homes
Above these spaces, a 30 m2 roof terrace provides a rare private retreat in central London with space for dining, relaxed seating and planting. To improve daylight and flexibility, the lower level has been re-planned. Three en-suite bedrooms are arranged around a bright central hall lit by voids rising through the extension. The principal suite spans the full width of the building and takes advantage of five windows facing the street.
This Old Street rooftop extension shows how historic homes can be sensitively expanded to provide generous outdoor space, flexible layouts and improved natural light while respecting their architectural setting.
